Trip to OSU's Dairy Farm

This week my Animal Science class took a trip to OSU's Dairy Farm. Larissa Lewis gave us a full tour of the facility and a look into the day to day activities that their cows participate in. Containing over 200 cows and 150 acres for both grazing and feeding the facility caters to every cows possible need.

Our first stop was with the baby calves, these little ones range from 1 week to about 6 weeks. Drinking about 2 quarts of milk a day as well as supplements to make sure they are strong and healthy.

After those initial weeks inside their own pens they are transferred to larger pens to get them used to sharing space with eachother. Around the same time their diet changes to grass and rolled corn.

Finally these larger shared pens on the right are for the cows who are close to birthing a new calf when they are 2 weeks out they will get their own pen to birth their calf. On the right we have one cow with mastitis, a bacterial infection in the utters, who needs some time to heal.
